Burnaby Winter Club vs Pursuit of Excellence Oct 5, 2012

Oct 5, 2012,Burnaby Winter Club vs Pursuit of Excellence (Chilliwack AAA Bantam Tournament)

BWC#17 D, Fabbro, Dante Best way to describe him today is a vacuum. Just sucked up everything around his area. Was matched up against the opponent’s best players and made them look quite average. Played the game so hard, it was quite impressive to see him be able to be so good all game long. So good on the rush defensively, opponents just could not get around him at all. Uses his stick effectively, maintains a very good gap and steps into them whenever he sees a window of opportunity. Always has his stick around the puck to deflect away shots or passes. Moved well with the puck today as usual and displayed his rocket of a slap shot again.

BWC#30 G, Shugrue, Tyler Quick moving goaltender had a solid game. Didn’t have to be spectacular, just consistently good and he was able to do that. Extremely quick on his knees, and recovers in a heart beat. Really liked the way he was tracking pucks today. Did not have trouble with traffic in front of him, and just did his job. Good rebound control, and kicked away everything to the corners. Showed off some good, active hands. Aggressive angling, and took away a lot of room.

BWC#93 RW, White, Jaeger Creative forward who looked absolutely dominant at times, and not as impressive at other times. Unreal vision, and often times played like he had eyes located at the back of his head. Just knew where all of his teammates were, and where they would be going. Impressive balance and core strength. Was getting beat up along the walls all game long, but was able to get out of trouble more often than not. Possesses a lethal shot, whether it be a slapper, wrist shot or backhand. Drove to the net at one point on his backhand, and roofed top shelf right over the goaltender’s shoulders. Impressive with such little room to work with. Didn’t really like his play without the puck. Saw him be a little lazy on the backcheck when his team had the lead. Could be harder to play against, especially with his level of strength.

POE#9 F, Ayre, Trevor Forward who was one of the team’s better players today. Showed off some good hockey sense and created some turnovers in the neutral zone and made good plays with the puck. Displayed good speed, and played with a lot of energy all game long. Only about 5’9 tall, but tries to play a physical game and use his body as much as he can. Not bad in his own zone, but has a tendency to get too caught up watching the puck and not maintaining a shooting lane. Needs to have his stick on the ice more often to be able to pick off passes more often.

POE#12 C, McDonald, Kody Very disappointing game to his standards. Was matched up against Dante Fabbro and was not effective at all. Invisible all day. Tried to use his speed and size, but was matched stride for stride. The longer the game went, the more he tried to force plays, and subsequently turned over the puck a number of times. Looked like he was a step behind the play often and quite overwhelmed by the pace of the play. His team needs him at his best consistently to be a better team. Just could not deliver today.

SCOUT’S NOTES: I personally had high expectations for this game, but I was disappointed with the way Pursuit of Excellence played. Their players just did not show up to play, and it really showed in all areas of the game. They were out hustled to the puck every time, and just was not able to keep up with Burnaby. First time I was able to watch Jaeger White today, and was impressed with his offensive abilities. Haven’t seen a prospect be as complete in the offensive zone as him this year. Little concerned about his defensive play though. Dante Fabbro controlled Kody McDonald all game long. This match up wasn’t even close. Fabbro played a complete game. Hard to believe there could be better prospects out there at this moment.
