Erie Otters vs. Seattle Thunderbirds, May 20, 2017
2017 Memorial Cup – Round Robin Game #2
ERI #27 RW Lodnia, Ivan (2017) – Challenged defenders one on one, but didn’t have much success early. Good hand eye to bat a clearing attempt out of mid air and keep the play in the offensive zone. High compete level.
SEA #2 D Strand, Austin (2017**) – Consistent first pass. Great hands on the point to keep the puck in the offensive zone. Good in one on one plays consistently shutting down opponents. Great hands carrying the puck out of the offensive zone. Good play in the slot to take away the puck and make a quick pass up. He then jumped up in the rush and drove the net for a scoring chance. Then next shift late in the second period, right after his team gave up the go ahead goal, Austin walked in from the point and fired a great wrist shot top shelf to tie the game 2-2. Stuck with his man down low and landed a good hit. Good mix of physicality and stick work to come out of a large majority of battles with the puck. Made a bad play early in the third chasing the play out to centre resulting in an odd man chance against.
SEA #4 D Ottenbreit, Turner (2017**) – Turner played top unit penalty kill. He plays a conservative game on the back end and supports defensive partner on the rush protecting for passing back or a turnover. Lacks puck playing ability. Caught up ice and out of position on a breakaway chance and didn’t show much urgency getting back. Not aggressive enough going into the corners for his size.
SEA #5 D Tyszka, Jarret (2017) – Has ok skating ability. Rushed his puck play when carrying up ice and was pressured. Leaves too much gap one on one and was a little passive but reached out with his stick to break up the play with the end of his stick. Misread the play and ran out of position giving Erie a clear lane from the point to the net. Stepped up one on one just before the blueline but didn’t get enough of his man resulting in a partial breakaway chance against.
SEA #16 C True, Alexander (2017**) – Good release on his shot. Good skating for his size. Still needs to fill out his frame. Top power play unit. Second penalty killing unit.
SEA #18 RW Moilanen, Sami (2017) – Pulled up on a chance to hit a bigger opponent. Later landed a solid hit on a much smaller opponent.
SEA #19 LW Neuls, Donovan (2017*) – Effortless skating stride, good speed, plays a very high paced game. Works hard in all three zones. Second penalty killing unit. Got banged around in the slot a bit but showed great compete to battle for a scoring chance.
SEA #21 C Wedman, Matthew (2017) – Great hit along the wall. Plays a very aggressive style of game. Pretty good skating for his size. Works hard in all three zones. Hard release on his shot.
SEA #1 G Stankowski, Carl (2018) – Great flexibility to stop a quick redirection. Great cross crease quickness to make some solid saves. Excellent quickness and anticipation to shut down well designed plays. Sometimes struggled to find loose pucks in his crease area. Great glove safe on the penalty kill on a point blank shot to keep his shutout early second. First goal against was a one-timer in close on a bouncing puck. Second goal against was a great play by a pinching defender to beat him cross crease.
Final Score: Erie Otters: 4 – Seattle Thunderbirds: 2
