The Rimouski Océanic announced on September 29th that Alexis Lafrenière will be their captain for the 2019-2020 season. Lafrenière is the 25th captain in team history.

Rimouski also announced the signing of Zachary Bolduc, their top pick in last year’s QMJHL Draft. He had originally opted to go the U.S prep route with Mount St-Charles Academy, playing two games with Sioux City in the USHL Fall Classic. Bolduc was drafted 14th overall but was ranked 5th in our QMJHL rankings going into the draft.

Chicoutimi announced that they will be without NHL draft-eligible forward Théo Rochette for a minimum of one month, as he is currently sidelined with mono.

Anaheim Ducks have signed Benoit-Olivier Groulx to an entry level contract, Groulx is back with Halifax for his last major junior season before making the jump to the pro next season. Anaheim selected Groulx in the 2nd round (54th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft.

Bowen Byram and Ty Smith were both sent back to the WHL, which should make their respective teams and Hockey Canada very happy. Both should be top players in the WHL once again this season and should each have a big role on Canada’s World Junior squad.

Dylan Cozens was also sent back to the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In his first 3 games, the Buffalo Sabres’ prospect had 8 points and was named Player of the Week in the WHL.

Noah Dobson has made the New York Islanders’ roster following a strong training camp. The Islanders had to waive veteran defensemen Thomas Hickey in order to make room for the rookie, indicating they want Dobson to stay for the whole year, not just for a 9-game audition. For the second year in a row, Dobson won both the President’s Cup and Memorial Cup, this time with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, in addition to being named playoff MVP in the QMJHL.

Ryan Suzuki was sent back to Barrie by the Carolina Hurricanes. In his 2nd game back, he registered 4 points against Mississauga. Suzuki should be one of the top scorers in the OHL this season and should also challenge to make Team Canada at the World Juniors in December.

Oilers prospect Matej Blumel won’t go to the NCAA with UConn, as he signed a one-year contract with Pardubice in the Czech Extraliga. The Czech forward scored 30 goals in 58 games with Waterloo in the USHL last season and was drafted in the 4th round by Edmonton this past June.

The Barrie Colts announced on September 23rd that they signed Latvia goaltender Arturs Silovs to an OHL contract. Silovs was a 6th-round pick by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Barrie drafted Silovs with the 11th overall pick in the 2019 CHL Import Draft. We had Silovs as a ‘C’ rated prospect in our 2019 NHL Draft Black Book.

In OHL Draft news, it was announced on September 25th that Adam Fantilli would leave the Toronto Jr. Canadiens to play with his older brother Lucas at Kimball Union Academy, in the USA prep school system.
